SHOP SPEED PRO - £60

Premium cycling glasses cost up to £225. The Hystride Speed Pro costs £60. We put the specs side by side to find out what - if anything - you're giving up.

Before any riding, we pulled the specs. Both pairs against the same criteria cyclists actually care about: weight, lens category, anti-fog, UV protection, and lens interchangeability.

"I switched from Oakley."
Here's what the spec sheet actually says.

The fogging problem

Weight and lens category are table stakes. The real test for any cycling glass is what happens at effort - specifically on climbs, where your pace drops, your breathing deepens, and the airflow that was keeping your lenses clear disappears.

Fogging on climbs is the single most common complaint in cycling eyewear reviews. It's not a niche problem. It's the problem. And it's the one area where frame design actually separates the credible options from the rest.

The Speed Pro uses a ventilated frame that keeps airflow moving across the lens even at low speed. The geometry channels air rather than trapping it. In practice, that means no fogging at tempo on a 12% gradient - which is where a lot of premium glass fails without any ventilation design at all.

No fogging. Finally

Three different pairs over the past two years and every single one fogged on the same climb. 8% gradient, pace drops, done. These didn't. Wore them for five hours on Saturday including two long ascents and not once did I have to pull them off. 23g as well - I genuinely forgot I had them on by mile 40. Oakley are getting dusty in the drawer.

Better than expected

I'll be honest I bought these thinking they'd be a backup pair. They're not a backup pair anymore. Did a sportive in them last month, 85 miles, and they were fine the whole way. Didn't fog, didn't move, didn't think about them which is all you want really. The price is obviously good but they'd be worth more than this.

Hard to argue with. Have purchased extra lenses.

Does what it says. Bought for a trip to Mallorca, wanted a spare pair that wouldn't hurt if they got lost or broken. Ended up wearing them most of the week over my usual pair. Lighter than I expected, no fogging on the climbs which was the main thing I was worried about, and the lens quality is fine. Nothing flashy about them. They just work.

Why is it £60?

The short answer: no brand tax. Hystride doesn't sponsor WorldTour teams or pay for shelf space in chain stores. The spec budget goes into the frame, the lens, and the ventilation system - not the marketing overhead that premium brands fold into their RRP.

The TR90 nylon frame is the same material class used in performance eyewear at three times the price. The Cat. 3 polarised lens meets the same UV400 standard. The anti-fog ventilation is not a workaround - it's a design choice that the £225 benchmark doesn't make.

£60 is not a compromise price. It is what the glasses cost when you remove the brand premium from the equation.

The lens category is identical. The UV protection is identical. The Speed Pro is 8g lighter, has active anti-fog ventilation, and includes a second interchangeable lens - neither of which appears on the premium alternative at £225.
